Methyl salicylate (Methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate), also known as wintergreen oil, is a colorless or light yellow transparent viscous liquid, with a strong sweet, fruity odor. It naturally occurs in gaultheria procumbens, wintergreen or easter teaberry, B Lenta , black birch, meadow sweets, apple, cherry, and strawberries. It is not water-soluble. It is soluble in ethanol, ether, acetic acid, and other common organic solvents. It can change color when exposed to air.
Industrial Grade Methyl Salicylate is used as an odor-masking agent, insect repellent, fungicide, cosmetic ink, and fiber dying additive.
Premium Grade Methyl Salicylate is used as a fragrance or essence in toothpaste, chewing gum, mouth wash and various flavor agent.
